I sat with Chad Peck for more than an hour, and trust seems critical to him. Chad says his interest in focusing on reverse mortgages began ten years ago when he worked for a large mortgage company based out of state. That was when he ran into a scenario that changed his outlook on the mortgage industry. “I worked for a large mortgage company, providing traditional mortgage products for home loan borrowers,” says Chad. “Then, in 2006, I ran into a scenario where I was working with an elderly client, and it was clear that traditional mortgages would not do her a service. That client ended up being my first reverse mortgage client.
“I would say that it snowballed from there, and I decided I wanted to focus on reverse mortgages. Now I feel like I’m helping people, where traditional mortgage work was not rewarding.”
Chad tells me his passion for helping seniors like his first reverse mortgage client includes offering weekly educational workshops to anyone who is interested. “I can’t tell you how many people I have talked to about a reverse mortgage,” says Chad. “Our workshops give people a chance to come to a nonthreatening environment where they are not pressured to sign up for anything. They can just show up and get some education.”
According to Chad, his educational workshops are providing a great service to the community. “Many people ask me who the reverse mortgage is for,” says Chad. “It works for a wide spectrum of people, from those who are retired and suddenly feeling a financial pinch to those who want to increase their lifestyle after retirement. The FHA reverse mortgage, or HECM (Home Equity Conversion Mortgage), gives seniors the ability to improve their current financial situation. I wish seniors would take more time to become educated on today’s reverse mortgage. They may be surprised what they find out.”
I’m impressed with Chad’s commitment to helping seniors. He tells me he knows his clients are bombarded with information about reverse mortgages and he makes it a point to meet them personally, even if it means going to their home. “A lot of these large companies bombard their clients and they do everything over the phone, fax, email, etc.,” says Chad. “They never actually shake hands. I believe Reverse Freedom provides a better service, because we are local, based out of Sandy, Utah, and I actually meet with my clients face to face. If my clients can’t come to the office, I will go anywhere to meet them. Tomorrow I’m going to St. George to meet a client. I can’t imagine doing it any other way.”
For Chad, it’s about providing that personal touch, but it’s also about keeping costs down. “When I worked for the large mortgage company headquartered out of state, I noticed the bigger it got, the more restrictive it became,” says Chad. “I wanted more control over marketing decisions and to have more flexibility, so I resigned and started my own company. Ultimately marketing costs are passed on to the consumer. Now I’m saving costs by not paying celebrities!”
“This program is so rewarding,” Chad tells me. “No question about it. We’re taking a client’s current financial situation and improving it. I follow up with my clients years later, and they always say they wish they would have done this sooner.”
